January 17 YahooNews says Robert James Fischer, 64, is dead. Cause of death: kidney failure. He was interred at Laugardaelir church outside the town of Selfoss, and was buried in a private ceremony at a Catholic churchyard in southern Iceland. The funeral was attended by only a handful of people, mostly close friends, as well as Fischer’s long-time companion, Miyoko Watai, a Japanese chess player.
